Late on the evening of January 7th, Donald Trump posted on his Truth Social platform to essentially promulgate a 50% hike in defence spending for 2027. With the US defence budget already greater than the rest of the world combined, this building of what Trump refers to as a 'Dream Military' could mark significant tailwinds for companies involved in supplying the US military.

At the same time, Europe has to gauge the reliability of old alliances, push towards strategic autonomy, and react to cyber-related threats away from the battlefield.

Join Tom Bailey, Head of Research at HANetf, and Axel Belorde, Head of BD EMEA & Asia at VettaFi, for an informal discussion. Questions and comments are encouraged to help develop your thinking on the sector, but we will cover:

  1. $1.5trn budget - how likely is this and where might the winners be?
  2. What does the Pentagon spend on software vs hardware – is this likely to change?
  3. How is Europe building towards autonomy, and what progress has been made on the hardware and tech side in recent months?
  4. How do recent events in Venezuela/elsewhere factor into European strategic autonomy thinking?
